Keeping Your Children Safe
Last Summer we started a program to help parents learn how to speak with their children about keeping safe from adults who may seek to engage in inappropriate actions.
These programs were well received, and while initially geared towards keeping children safe while away at summer camp, the issues raised are applicable all year round.
For many families that means your children will be spending
time away from home to participate in various summer activities, including summer camp. Your children will be supervised and surrounded by adults and children you may not know as
well as you would like.
"A child is three times more likely to be molested by a
recognized trusted adult than by a stranger."
-David Finkelhor
While it may not be something we want to think about, and while it is not a subject most parents feel comfortable speaking about with their children, as parents we need to empower and protect our children as best we can from these dangers.
Research shows that a parent speaking to a child has the greatest impact on keeping children safe from adults who may seek to molest or otherwise abuse them. It pays to learn how to speak with them in an appropriate manner about this vital topic.
Project S.A.R.A.H. will be giving brief workshops in private homes to share with parents how they can approach this subject matter, and develop ongoing and effective communication designed to provide your children with the knowledge and strategies to help keep them safe from any kind of abuse.
Parents will also learn how to communicate with children, so that if children are abused, they will feel comfortable sharing that information with you, and you will be in a position to help them cope in the best way possible.
